Young Magic and Soft Spot at Cameo Gallery, 4/6/12

In Popgun Presents, Show Sketches on April 18, 2012 at 3:16 pm

How about some walnut ink, eh? I give the crayolas a break every now and then.

Soft Spot! As the story goes, the two frontmen grew up together in a country town– their lead singer would spend her evenings singing in the church choir, and immediately steal away to an underground punk show. The classical training shows– I remember being struck by her ethereal voice and exclaiming “Kate Bush!” to a friend at one point. And the vocals cocktail well with the shimmery, pointed gusto of their music, likably reminiscent of Blonde Redhead and Grizzly Bear.

And in a strange turn of events, I actually had less time to draw Young Magic than I did Soft Spot. Which is sad– I love their work, and they are playing with very compelling combinations of Brooklyn fuzz pop and hip hop.

All was held at the cute little Cameo Gallery.

An eternal thank you to Popgun Presents, who have essentially sponsored the whole show sketching project with a generous amount of press passes.
